A few words from young choreographer Alexa Mason

We previewed Alexa's new curtain-raiser duet, Oxygen, at Déda in Derby on Friday 19th August. We will try to put some video highlights from this first performance on the blog soon, but in the mean time, here are a few words from Alexa about her experience of making the duet:

I have learnt so much during these past two weeks, about myself as a choreographer and about what dancers need to understand when learning material. e.g, the intention of the movement, and also the dancer's character during the performance - they have to understand why they are doing what they are doing: perhaps there is a story behind it. In this way the movement and performance has a stronger emotion to it rather than just an idea.

I have been playing with the idea of survival, and what kind of thing you do to stay alive. Also, what happens when there are only two people fighting for the same thing - do they argue? manipulate each other and fight for the space? or perhaps help each other on their way...
