Week 3: Thoughts from Clare

Following on from our last blog post, after Clare Daly visited us in rehearsals last week she sent through some feedback about the work she had seen:
Katie Green very kindly gave me the opportunity to spend time with Made by Katie Green in rehearsal as part of my work placement. I joined them last week at Moving East for company class and to observe rehearsals for Matters of Life and Death.

There was a focused, industrious yet relaxed energy about the place. Katie’s ability as a choreographer to inspire and guide the dancers was evident immediately as the first rehearsal began. The dancers, Dani, Morgan, Adam, Marie and Rebecca are in turn engaged and enthusiastic. It is a relationship which enables an honest and natural work to emerge.

An element of the piece worked on during the week was the development of the characters' emotions from anxiety, panic and guilt to trust. With a dark theme the movement which materialised was beautifully expressive, aggressive and in ways ritualistic. The extracts of the soundtrack I heard, composed by Max Perryment, increase the haunting, raw and racing atmosphere of the piece.

Another aspect in progress was working with the objects, designed by James Perkins, which create a set like structure and astutely show progression of the story. This feature required technical and timing precision which Katie and the dancers worked on intensively.

It was a valuable experience for me to spend time with Katie and her company, to watch a distinguished choreographer at work and get such great advice from her!

I really look forward to seeing the finished work in performance and wish Katie and the dancers the best of luck!!

And thank you for having me!
